The sample looked perfect, but the container that arrived did not match it. This is the single most common complaint from tile importers, and it is why tile quality inspection before shipment is not optional. A systematic pre-shipment QC check catches shade variation, warpage, size deviation and packaging problems while the goods are still in China — before you pay the balance and before the cost of fixing them multiplies.
Factories almost always send carefully selected samples. They are from the best production run, often hand-picked and sometimes even from a different line than bulk production. The real quality story is in the random cartons from the finished-goods warehouse.
In 2025, China implemented the new quality-grading standard GB/T 45817-2025, which classifies ceramic tiles into 3A, 4A and 5A grades. According to the China Building and Sanitary Ceramics Association, only about 5% of products can stably reach 5A grade. The gap between a marketing-grade sample and the average carton in a bulk shipment can be significant, especially when factories compete on price.

Industry reference: these standards draw on ISO 13006 / EN 14411 classification and ISO 10545 test methods. For projects requiring formal compliance, always request accredited third-party laboratory reports rather than in-house factory certificates.
For rectified tiles — especially large-format porcelain such as 600×1200mm, 750×1500mm and bigger — dimensional accuracy is critical. A 0.5mm size deviation across a thousand square metres creates visible grout-line variation and lippage.
Warpage is even more dangerous. A tile can measure correctly at the edges but bow in the centre. When laid, the centre rises above neighbouring tiles, creating a tripping hazard and an ugly shadow line. Large formats are especially prone to this because they cool unevenly after firing.
Practical check: place two tiles face-down on a flat steel table and push them together edge-to-edge. If light passes through the joint, you have a curvature problem. For 600×600mm and larger, a feeler gauge should not slide more than 0.5mm under a 1m straight edge placed diagonally across the tile.
Surface quality complaints fall into three categories: shade variation, visible defects and gloss inconsistency.
Shade variation is the most frequent issue. Porcelain and glazed tiles are fired in batches, and glaze colour shifts with kiln temperature and atmosphere. Factories sort tiles into shade lots (calibers), but mistakes happen — especially when production is rushed. Always confirm:
Visible defects include pinholes, glaze pits, scratches, "orange peel" texture on glossy surfaces and print misalignment on wood- or stone-look tiles. Check under angled light — many defects only show when light skims across the surface.
Gloss consistency matters for polished and glazed tiles. A batch with uneven gloss levels will look patchy once installed. Compare at least six pieces side by side under the same light source.
Water absorption determines whether a tile is porcelain or ceramic, and where it can be used. Under ISO 13006 / EN 14411:

For floor tiles, breaking strength is just as important. Porcelain floor tiles should exceed 1,300N breaking strength and 35 N/mm² modulus of rupture. If a supplier cannot produce accredited lab reports for these numbers, that tells you something about the factory's quality control.
Quick field test: place a few drops of water on the back of a tile. A porcelain tile should absorb almost nothing over 30 minutes. Tap the tile with a coin — a clear ringing sound indicates dense vitrification; a dull thud suggests a porous or cracked body.
Even perfect tiles can arrive chipped if packaging is weak. For ocean shipment, cartons must survive stacking, humidity and rough handling.

If you palletise at origin, budget roughly $0.20–$0.40/m² extra, but it is almost always worth it. Palletised loads unload faster, store better and suffer far less corner damage during handling.
