Porcelain vs Ceramic Tiles: Which to Import from China

Choosing the wrong tile type is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes importers make. Here is the practical difference, based on 19 years inside the industry.

1. The core difference: water absorption

The single technical line between porcelain and ceramic is water absorption. Under the Chinese standard GB/T 4100 and the international ISO 13006:

• Porcelain (瓷质砖): water absorption E ≤ 0.5% — the densest, lowest-porosity body.
• Ceramic / stoneware: higher water absorption (stoneware roughly 0.5%–10%, ceramic wall tile often > 10%) — lighter and easier to cut.

Lower water absorption means porcelain resists moisture, staining and frost far better than ceramic.

2. Strength and where each is used

Because it is fired denser, porcelain has higher breaking strength and is frost-proof. It is the right choice for floors, wet areas (bathrooms, kitchens), outdoors and commercial spaces.

Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut and usually cheaper, which makes it ideal for indoor walls and very light-traffic residential floors. For most export flooring projects, porcelain is the default.

3. PEI abrasion rating (for glazed floor tiles)

The PEI rating (0–5) shows a glazed tile's resistance to surface abrasion:

• PEI 0–1: wall tiles only.
• PEI 3–4: residential floors.
• PEI 4–5: residential + commercial / high-traffic floors.

Specify PEI 4–5 for any floor that sees real foot traffic.

4. Size and format trends from Foshan

5. How to choose for your project

• Floor, wet or outdoor: choose porcelain (E ≤ 0.5%), PEI 4–5.
• Indoor wall: ceramic or porcelain, PEI 0–1 acceptable.
• Commercial / high traffic: porcelain, PEI 5, with anti-slip finish where needed.
• Tight budget, decorative wall: ceramic is usually the cost-efficient pick.
